Using Your Crutches – Things to Think About When Sizing and Fitting

Crutch PadsYou have been most likely sized and fitted for crutches when you received them. However, it is still a good idea to make sure your crutch pads and handgrips are set at the proper distance for you.

1. The top of your crutches (crutch armrest pads) should reach to 1.5 to 2 inches (3-5 cm) from your underarm when you are standing upright. Use two of your fingers to help measure this.

2. Your elbows should be slightly bent (15-30 degrees) while grasping the hand grips, enough so you can extend your elbow when you take a step. You don’t want your elbows bent too much thoug, becasue you will be arrying much of your weight with your arms.

3. Hold the armrests of the crutches tightly to your side, squeezing the crutch covers with your arms and sides.

4. Use your arms and hands to hold your weight. Yes, this will take some work, rest when you need to.

5. Be careful, do not let the armrests of your crutches press into your underarms and do not rest your weight on them. Pressure in your underarm can damage the nerves that go down into your arms and hands.

6. It’s likely the tops of the crutches will rub some against your inner arm and your sides, possibly causing discomfort. You will need to make sure you use your arm strength to reduce the pressure and friction. Additional crutch covers or crutch pads can help.

Bonus tip: Balance is a key to walking well with crutches. Keep your body in good alignment with your head held high, shoulders back, and stomach and buttocks in. Be sure and look ahead as you walk with your crutches, don’t look down.

This little bag hangs securely just below your hand grip, and helps you with all the little things you need to carry.

You know, your phone, your keys, your glasses, a bottle of water.

It’s not huge, this little helper, but that’s to keep you well-balanced and moving about with less risk.

In fact, many of our customers feel it is just right.

Like Susan from Tampa, Florida:

“Thank you! What a difference in comfort. Being on crutches is challenging enough without having to deal with the discomfort of using crutches.

Crutch Buddies are wonderful. Not only do I get around in “relative comfort”, but the pocket is fabulous.

Thank you! I have recommended them strongly! Take care and thank you!”

Works Great!

Just got this sweet testimonial from Sandra in Palo Alto, CA.

“My husband was getting irritation under his arms & hand pain before the crutch buddies & these relieved them both.

Before they arrived a friend had bought him some expensive sheepskin covers, that were useless in comparison!

Thanks!”

She had purchased the Value Package which include both the Crutch Covers and the Crutch Pocket for one low price.

We get these every day in our email inbox. It’s so nice to hear how we help people feel better while they are on crutches.

Best wishes!

New and improved design of Crutch Padding!

Crutch Buddies re-designs Extra Crutch Covers thanks to customer feedback

Nearly everyone who has used crutches understands.

The dang things are just uncomfortable. They rub. They bruise. Basically, they hurt.

Since the beginning of Crutch Buddies, the design of the polar fleece padding for crutches has been to reduce the friction and pressure which causes much of this pain.

At Crutch Buddies, we continually refine our product thanks to feedback our customers give us.

Recently, we sent several sets of “proto-type” crutch pads to friends, family, and customers.

Their feedback has helped us develop even better Crutch Covers than ever before.

We still use Polartec fleece from Massachusetts (only crutch padding manufacturers to do this).

But now, in-between the thick, cushy fleece, we have sandwiched a layer of medical grade foam we order from Minnesota.
